Nick Gammon was born in Pembroke, Wales in 1958 and grew up in the Mumbles near Swansea, before studying painting at Chelsea School of Art and Bath Academy of Art, better known as Corsham. During the 80s he was Howard Hodgkin’s studio assistant, whilst also running his own studio in London.

In the early 90s he made his first solo shows in London, since when he has exhibited in numerous galleries accross Europe, from Brussels to Berlin and Barcelona and from Munich to Milan, Paris and London. He has been shortlisted for the John Moore’s painting prize and was artist in residence to the city of Munich.

Having moved to Ireland in the early 90s he moved to Biarritz in 2002 and then to Amsterdam in 2016. Over the last ten years, he became increasingly interested in photography – in both its reportage and plastic forms.

His work has followed a trajectory from the idea of painting being mostly about matter, a visual "thing" and how you see it, to include narrative which is the primary function of photography. Currently he is attempting to braid these two threads, object and subject, together.
